Near the banks fo the Delaware River on Friday night, some seventy miles west of Union City, the Union City High School Soaring Eagles football team made school history. The Soaring Eagles, the number 2 seed, knocked off number 1 seeded Phillipsburg by a score of 24-17, capturing the school’s first-ever, NJSIAA state sectional title.
The North 2, Group 5 sectional championship game was a hard fought battle, with the Soaring Eagles rushing for 231 yards of offense and three touchdowns to knock off the Stateliners on their home field.
Union City will now face Passaic Tech in a rematch of the opening game of the season. The Eagles suffered their only loss of the year in that game, 13-6. Union City, 10-1, will now travel to Passaic Tech for that rematch on Friday, November 17th at 6 pm.
Last night’s victory was also Union City Head Coach Will Valdez’s 100th of his career.
