In a significant step towards sustainability and the promotion of electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the city of Hoboken has unveiled its plan to add a network of state-of-the-art EV charging stations. Four new on-street EV charging stations, including the city’s first two DC fast charging stations, are available for public use in western Hoboken. Two DC fast chargers are available at the Monroe Arts Center on the west side of Monroe Street between Seventh and Eighth Street. They offer charging speeds of 50 kW, which can charge a vehicle’s battery from 20 percent to 80 percent in about an hour or less. The fee is $0.49 per kWh while charging and $0.50 per minute while the vehicle is plugged in but no longer charging.
Two “level 2” charging stations are available at Columbus Park on the south side of 10th Street between Clinton and Grand Streets. These charging stations can add about 20 to 25 miles of range per hour, and they will be free of charge for a 6-month period until April 30, 2024.
The new EV charging stations, installed at no cost to the City, are the first of 25 new stations which, when combined with the 11 level 2 charging stations the City previously installed, will ensure residents throughout the city are within a 5-minute walk of a public charging station by 2030. Since 2021, Hoboken’s publicly accessible stations have had a total of 16,338 charging sessions. The only other curbside charging station in Hoboken, on First Street, accounted for 40 percent of total sessions.
