Hoboken Expands Textile Recycling Program

The City of Hoboken recently announced the expansion of the Hoboken Textile Recycling Program, adding two new drop-off locations as well as two reusable bag donation bins to support the Hoboken Community Center’s food pantry distribution program.

The City officially launched the textile recycling program in December of 2022 as part of the City’s Climate Action Plan to be carbon neutral by 2050. The program aims to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by solid waste by diverting textiles from landfills. So far, the program has recycled over 2 tons of textiles that would have otherwise been sent to a landfill.

“The textile recycling program is an easy way for residents to help reduce their contributions to climate change in furtherance of our ambitious Climate Action Plan,” said Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla. “I encourage residents to utilize our new collection bins and to donate their reusable bags to the Hoboken Community Center so that they can continue to support those facing food insecurity.”

“The Hoboken Community Center is appreciative of the support of the Mayor, City Council, and the Hoboken Green Team to provide additional opportunities to collect reusable bags,” said Toni Tomarazzo of the Hoboken Community Center. “The bags are used to pack and distribute food to the 1600 families registered with Hoboken Community Center Food Pantry and reduce the cost of providing one use bags while protecting our environment.“

Through the textile recycling program, started through a partnership with the Hoboken Green Team, residents can drop off unwearable and non-donatable textiles, such as shoes, clothing, accessories, and linens at four drop-off bins to be recycled.

According to Hoboken’s 2019 Greenhouse Gas Inventory, 9 percent of the community’s greenhouse gas emissions come from solid waste. To reduce this number, the City launched and expanded the free residential compost drop-off program for organic recycling and the Zero Waste Initiative to create a Zero Waste Plan to improve Hoboken’s waste management system.
