Hoboken Kills NFL Bar Hours Extension in Tight 4-5 Vote

Hoboken City Council voted 4-5 on Sept. 16 to defeat an ordinance that would have let the administration extend bar hours for major sporting events, including NFL games, killing the measure.

Councilman Michael Russo led opposition, arguing the change would hand too much power to the administration and that NFL Sundays do not qualify as special events.

“This isn’t a special sporting event. All right. Come on, guys. Then I’m going to start doing… the ping pong championship… I don’t think the NFL Sunday’s is a special event.”

Russo cited noise complaints from first-ward residents, slammed car doors, Uber traffic and horns, and said the council should retain authority over any hour changes rather than delegate them.

Supporters said the ordinance would add structure, requiring written findings on economic impact, public safety and neighborhood effects, plus seven days’ public notice before any extension. Alcohol service would still be barred before 5 a.m.

The failed measure would have amended Chapter 68 to cover professional, collegiate or international events expected to generate significant tourism or economic activity in the city.

Vote Result

The ordinance failed 4-5. Voting yes: Phil Cohen, Steve Firestone, Caitlin Layson, and Joe Quintero. Voting no: Tiffanie Fisher, Diane Imus, Paul Presinzano, Michael Russo, and Ruben Ramos Jr.
