Hoboken PD Tracks Van in Stolen Motorcycle Case Leading to Newark Chop Shop


Arrestees: Jose Ventura-Perez 34 of Newark and Carmen Martinez 31 of Newark

Officers in Charge: Detective Michael Miranda and Detective Sergeant Jonathan Mecka

On July 8th 2020, Detective Michael Miranda was made aware of a motorcycle theft which took place in the area of 3rd and River Streets, Hoboken. Through his investigation Det. Miranda was able to track the van that was used to steal the motorcycle back to Newark, New Jersey address. Over the next 2 months Detective Miranda worked with Newark Police Detective Javier Figueroa (4th Precinct), Essex County Sheriff Officer Kevin Macken and the New Jersey State Police Auto theft task force to identify the potential whereabouts of the stolen motorcycle. The information obtained during that time frame led to a search of a residence and garage occupied by Jose Ventura-Perez and Carmen Martinez. As a result of the search warrant we recovered multiple reported stolen vehicles and evidence which showed that the location was being used as a facility to sell stolen motor vehicle parts.

Ultimately they were charged with the following:

Jose Ventura-Perez was charged with Burglary and Theft for stealing the Motorcycle on 07/08/20,

Jose Ventura-Perez was additionally charged along with Carmen Martinez with the following:

8 counts of Receiving Stolen Property charges (stolen motorcycles from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey including Hoboken), recovered stolen Jet Ski (Ridgefield Park) and recovered stolen vehicle (Franklin Township),

3 counts of Removal or alteration of vehicle identification numbers

1 count of Operation of a facility of stolen parts

In addition to recovering stolen items, over $14,000.00 was recovered which was believed to be proceeds of the crime.

The arrest process took place in Newark and once completed they were transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility.
