On Sunday, May 31, 2020, at about 2:58 PM, Hoboken Police received a call of a male who brandished a machete in the area of the Path Station on Hudson Place. The caller gave a description of the male but no direction of his travel. Hoboken Police Officers were dispatched and started a search of the immediate area as well as notifying New Jersey Transit and Port Authority Police. At about 3:15 PM, we received a call reporting a male fitting the same description chopping at a tree with a machete in the area of 3rd and Washington Street. The suspect was now reported to be with a second male. The search was expanded to 3rd and Washington Street. At about 3:18 PM, we received a call reporting a male fitting the same description swinging a machete in the air in front of 59 Newark Street by the New York Sports Club. Detective Edward Lepre was a block away and responded. The caller flagged down Detective Lepre and directed him towards Court Street. Detective Lepre approached on foot with his weapon drawn and observed the suspect walking southbound on Court Street behind the New York Sports Club. Detective Lepre observed both male. The suspect swinging the machete above his head. Detective Lepre then approached the two men from behind and ordered the suspect to drop the machete. The suspect threw the machete over a nearby fence. Both men placed their hands in the air and were ordered to their knees.
The following officers arrived as backup: Lieutenant Corrado Allegretta, D/Sergeant Josue Velez, Sergeant David Olivera, Detective Bret Globke, Detective Michael Losurdo, Officer Joshua Campoverde, Officer Mark Aurigemma, Officer Michael Aviles, and Officer Bernardo Munoz. Officer Michael Aviles placed the suspect under arrest. The suspect was identified as Razhem Smith 36 y/o Male from Newark, NJ. A search of Smith revealed he was in possession drug paraphernalia. Officer Bernardo Munoz placed handcuffs on the second male. The second male was identified as Jamar Cobb 32 y/o Male from Brooklyn, NY.
The machete retrieved and secured. Officer Munoz smelled what he believed to be marijuana emanating from Cobb. A search of Cobb revealed he was in possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance suspect Marijuana.
Cobb was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of CDS Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Cobbs’ charges were placed on a summons and he was released with a court date.
Smith was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Possession of Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Smith’s charges were placed on a warrant and he was committed to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. Smith also had a Failure to Appear warrant out of Newark, NJ.
Defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
