JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Hudson County Executive Craig Guy has appointed Desiree Grace, Esq., to lead the county’s first Office of Inspector General, a new watchdog post created to police waste, fraud, and misconduct in county government.
Guy proposed the office in July. The Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved the ordinance establishing it in August. Grace’s appointment is set to be announced at the board’s Sept. 22, 2026, caucus, with commissioners expected to ratify her contract on Thursday, Sept. 24.
Guy said Grace’s record made her the clear choice.
“Desiree Grace’s credentials are impeccable, and I have no doubt she will lead the Office of Inspector General with integrity and independence,” he said. “My administration prioritizes transparency and accountability, and the Office of Inspector General will serve as a watchdog ensuring Hudson County taxpayer dollars are not wasted or misspent.”
County Counsel Alberico De Pierro, who oversaw a broad search, said Grace stood out among a large field of candidates.
“Desiree was one of numerous candidates vetted, and it became resoundingly clear that she was the perfect candidate for the office,” De Pierro said. “Her career in safeguarding the taxpayers perfectly aligns with the quality of candidate needed.
”Grace graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland and earned her law degree magna cum laude from Seton Hall University School of Law. She spent nine years in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, serving as First Assistant U.S. Attorney, deputy chief of the Criminal Division, and Criminal Division chief. She was named Prosecutor of the Year by the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation in 2019 and 2024. She is currently a partner at McCarter & English in Newark.
“I am truly honored to be considered to serve as the Hudson County Inspector General,” Grace said. “I have dedicated the majority of my career to investigative work aimed at improving the community, and I welcome the opportunity to use that skill set to serve Hudson County in this new initiative.”
The new office is charged with investigating fraud, waste, and misconduct across county departments, agencies, boards, and related entities, and with recommending reforms to strengthen accountability in county government.
