Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Joel Galvis, 40, of Jersey City, NJ, on multiple weapons charges in Englewood, NJ. The arrest stems from a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, led by Chief Matthew Finck, and the Englewood Police Department, led by Chief Thomas Greeley.
On September 19, 2025, at approximately 6:27 a.m., Englewood Police responded to Englewood Hospital after Galvis arrived with a gunshot wound to his leg. Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit joined Englewood Police in the investigation, determining that Galvis’ injury was self-inflicted. A court-authorized search of Galvis’ nearby vehicle uncovered two firearms, one with a defaced serial number, and a high-capacity ammunition magazine.
Galvis faces charges including two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm (N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5B(1)), one count of second-degree certain persons not to possess a firearm (N.J.S.A. 2C:7B(1)), one count of fourth-degree possession of a defaced firearm (N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3D), and one count of fourth-degree possession of a large-capacity ammunition magazine (N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3J). After receiving medical treatment, Galvis was taken into custody and is being held at Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella emphasized that the charges are accusations, and Galvis is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He thanked the Englewood Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their support in the investigation.
