A Florida man has been convicted by a Hudson County Jury on all counts for the February 2021 shooting death of a Jersey City man.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced this afternoon that a Hudson County jury convicted 37-year old Ariel Dumit of Florida on all counts for the shooting death of Christian Parra, age 34, of Jersey City, on February 28, 2021.  Dumit was found guilty of murder, a crime of the first degree; possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, a crime of the second degree; and unlawful possession of a weapon, a crime of the second degree.

The verdict was delivered today before the Honorable Carlo Abad, J.S.C., following a two week trial. The State was represented in this matter by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutors Erica Bertuzzi and Luisa Florez.

Prosecutor Suarez says on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at approximately 8:18 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to the BJ’s Parking Lot at 396 Marin Boulevard in Jersey City on reports of a shooting.  Responding officers found a male victim – later identified as Christian Parra, 34, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9 p.m.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the torso and the manner of death to be homicide.

Dumit faces 30 years to life in New Jersey State Prison at sentencing, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, July 13, 2023.
