The Kearny Municipal Council held its reorganization meeting this week and an unexpected resignation occurred. At the beginning of the January 6th meeting, Second Ward Councilman Richard Konopka, a Democrat, unexpectedly announced his resignation, citing personal and health concerns.
Konopka had been a member of the governing body for eleven years. He previously served as a Zoning Board members and has been a beacon for the town’s recreation programs.
The Democratic Party’s County Committee has until January 21st to name a Council replacement. If a consensus choice cannot be agreed upon, then Mayor Carol Jean Doyle would likely select a Second Ward Democrat to fill the post, or leave the seat vacant until a November election.
