Jersey City Council At Large candidate Elvin Dominici submitted the following Letter to the Editor to Hudson TV regarding the recent agreement between the City and the Pompidou Center to open a satellite attraction in Journal Square to attract tourism:
Article: The Pompidou Center is a high price that our residents can not afford.
The council members of Jersey City need to understand the responsibility they have on their shoulders when it comes to expanding the monies and resources of our residents. I strongly believe arts is the language of culture and diversity, which define the essence of our great city. However, the project of the Pompidou Center in Jersey City is a high price that our residents can not afford, potentially eventually totaling $30M-$40M of payments from local residents.
The use of these funds are taking priority on the many issues affecting our city in the aftermath of the coronavirus. We have businesses closing, an increasing unemployed population due to most service jobs still struggling and we have an increased violence crisis where valuable young lives are being lost. Jersey City is facing real challenges in different core areas and our Council members must always put these issues as priorities.
The aftereffects of the pandemic are showcasing increased issues related to mental health challenges and violence, especially in the south side of Jersey City. We are losing the life of young people who do not have the resources or support needed to improve their outcomes in life. We have many grassroots organizations who are working diligently day by day with our communities and they do not receive resources or support from the administration. Furthermore, we have a public school system which every year struggles to get local and state resources and try their hardest to provide the best possible education to our children with a limited amount of resources. We can not forget to mention the increasing population of homelessness who are mostly in Greenville/Lafayette areas without a human solution to ensure their care, mental health programs and a real opportunity to support their transition into a stable lifestyle.
My Triple A platform is based on three main core points: Accountability, Affordability and Accessibility. I will advocate for the issues which are the true priorities of our Jersey City residents. As your Councilman at Large, I will always prioritize the issues that impact your lives rather than priorities that will gain headlines or media attention for the administration. I will work to create proactive resolutions to help solve the true issues that are priorities to our local residents.
I strongly believe that the high number of homicides in the south side of our city must be the top priority of this or any other municipal administration. We are currently on pace to match or pass our 28 homicides per year. The names of Randolph Black Jr, 25 years old and Jason Crutcher, 26 years old, who were homicide numbers 11 and 12 of this year. Their loss are a heavy pain in the hearts of their family, loved ones, and our community.
I am running as an Independent Councilman At Large because it is imperative we bring responsible leadership to our City Council that ensures the areas which the city is struggling are addressed with high determination. We deserve proven community leaders who can will address the priorities and needs of our local residents!
