STATEMENT FROM MAYOR BHALLA REGARDING FIRST KNOWN POSITIVE CASE OF COVID-19 IN HOBOKEN

Today, I was informed by the Hoboken Health Department that the first known positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Hoboken was identified as a male in his 40’s. The affected individual has been kept in self-isolation at home. The Hoboken Health Department has been in close contact with the individual, who is only experiencing mild symptoms and is expected to recover fully.

Since receiving this information, the Hoboken Health Department has been developing a timeline of events. Individuals who may have been in contact with the patient are being notified and being recommended for self-quarantine, as advised by the New Jersey Department of Health. The Hoboken Health Department has also been in touch with these individuals and is monitoring them closely.

To be clear, we unfortunately anticipate the likelihood of additional positive COVID-19 cases to be confirmed in the days and weeks ahead, which have not yet been discovered. However, we are doing everything possible to limit the spread of COVID-19 through proactive measures and regulations. I greatly appreciate the community’s cooperation during this challenging time.

As recommended by the Hoboken Health Department, if you are a resident of Hoboken and believe you were exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19, you should contact your healthcare provider first instead of going to the emergency room. Carepoint is urging all residents to observe this protocol to keep the emergency room available for those needing critical emergency care.

If you are having a medical emergency, please call 9-1-1. You may also contact the Hoboken Health Department at 201-420-2000 ext. 5211 if you believe you were exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19.

As an important reminder – please continue washing your hands frequently, avoid putting your hands in your mouth and eyes, avoid contact with others if you feel sick, and maintain a clean environment through frequent disinfecting of common areas.

For FAQs about COVID-19, please visit www.nj.gov/health or call the New Jersey COVID-19 hotline at 1-800-222-1222 or if using out-of-state phone line 1-800-962-1253. Trained healthcare professionals are standing by to answer your call 24/7.
