More Than $4 Billion In Federal Transportation Funding For Northeast Corridor Projects

Congressman Rob Menendez (D – District 8), United States Senator Cory Booker (D – New Jersey) and Newark Mayor Raz Baraka met earlier this week to announce more than $4 billion in federal funding to improve transportation along the heavily travelled, Northeast Corridor….needed money for rail tunnels, bridges and stations.

Funding for the projects comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.  The funds will go for a variety of necessary upgrades to the Gateway Program, including:

  • Facilitate final design and construction for the Hudson Tunnel Project;
  • Rehabilitate the 90-year-old Dock Bridge;
  • Enable Replacement of the Sawtooth Bridges, a serious NEC bottleneck; and
  • Fund accessibility upgrades at Newark Penn Station with the repair of elevators and escalators.

Tens of thousands of jobs, many of them union jobs, will be created from this infusion of dollars.
