UPDATED: 3-Alarm Residential Fire in Bayonne Displaces 13

The Bayonne Fire Department brought a multi-alarm fire in a residential home under control by 5 o’clock Wednesday afternoon.  The structure fire was located on 126 West 27th Street between JF Kennedy Boulevard and Avenue A.

The three-alarm blaze broke out at approximately 3:38 pm.  Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver released the following statement:

“Arriving units found heavy fire conditions…with the fire extending to both adjacent buildings. Firefighters used multiple handlines within both structures.  The fire progressed to three alarms and was brought under control an hour later.  Two firefighters suffered injuries during the blaze and were transported to local medical centers by McCabe Ambulance, treated and released.  One occupant was treated by McCabe at the scene and required no further medical attention.  Firefighters also rescued two cats from 124 West 27th Street, with one cat suffering from smoke inhalation.  The cat was given oxygen by McCabe EMS and released to the owner.”

The Bayonne Building Department has determined both structures are uninhabitable.  13 residents have been displaced and are under the care of the American Red Cross and the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management.

The fire is under investigation, but it is not deemed suspicious.

Chief Weaver added, “The quick action of our firefighters, along with our mutual aid partners from the Jersey City Fire Department, stopped a large and aggressive fire from extending to nearby structures that were just feet apart.  Their training and experience proved to be decisive in controlling this blaze quickly. I want to thank our firefighters for a job well done and also thank JCFD, McCabe EMS, Bayonne PD and the Bayonne Fire Canteen for their assistance today.”
