Varias casas destruidas en un incendio masivo en Newark Oriental

One person was injured in a huge fire in East Newark this morning.  The blaze began at approximately 11:15 on President Street.  Five homes have either been damaged or totally destroyed.

According to several news outlets, neighbors say the multiple alarm blaze began when a motorcycle exploded inside a garage while it was being repaired.  Reportedly, the man working on the motorcycle suffered serious burns.

Winds at the time of the fire caused the flames to spread to neighboring residences, which are row houses in that part of East Newark.

As many as 15 families have been displaced by the fire, which went to five or six alarms.  Mutual aid was provided by Fire Departments from Jersey City, Newark, Harrison, Kearny, Secaucus, Bayonne, Hoboken, North Arlington and North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue.

North Arlington and Lyndhurst Fire Departments provided coverage for the Harrison Fire Department while it was at the fire scene in East Newark.

The official cause of the blaze is under investigation by the New Jersey State Fire Marshall.
