North Bergen’s new junior high school welcomes students for the start of classes this week.  During a ceremony at the new facility earlier today, the North Bergen Board of Education surprised Mayor Nicholas Sacco by officially naming the building the Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School.

The announcement, which honors Sacco’s thirty years of service to both the township and the school district, brought cheers during the school’s ribbon cutting ceremony.

Mayor Sacco, who was clearly surprised by the gesture, stated, “I’ve spent my life as an educator and public servant focused on delivering what North Bergen students need, so this recognition today with the renaming of our community’s wonderful new school in my honor is incredibly touching and humbling.  I’m grateful to Dr. Solter and the Board of Education for this great honor, and I look forward to seeing the first students walk through the doors of the Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School this week.”

“The opening of this new junior high school represents years of planning, hard work, and commitment to our students’ future,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Solter.  “It provides the technology and resources our young people deserve as they prepare for the next stages of their education. Renaming the school in honor of Mayor Sacco is especially meaningful, as his leadership and dedication to education have been instrumental in making this day possible. This building is not only a school,  it is a symbol of the bright future of North Bergen.”

The state-of-the-art school, located in a completely renovated and expanded building which once housed High Tech High School, will welcome seventh and eighth grade students this Thursday, providing modern classrooms, advanced technology, and expanded spaces for the arts and sciences. Township officials emphasized that the investment reflects a commitment to providing students with the tools they need to succeed in a competitive and rapidly changing world.

The renaming honors Mayor Sacco’s lifelong dedication to education and his role in strengthening North Bergen’s public school system. In addition to serving as mayor, Sacco’s long career as an educator and administrator has left an enduring mark on generations of students.

Director of Special Projects and Township Commissioner Allen Pascual said, “Today we are not just opening a school, we are honoring a man whose life has been defined by his commitment to education and to North Bergen.  It is only fitting that this beautiful new building bears the name Nicholas J. Sacco.”

“This is an incredible moment for our students, our staff, and the entire North Bergen community,” said Principal of Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School Adamarys Galvin. “Walking into a brand-new building filled with opportunity is exciting enough, but knowing that it carries the name of Mayor Sacco, someone who has dedicated his life to education and to this township, makes it even more meaningful. Our mission is to ensure that every student who comes through these doors feels inspired to learn, to lead, and to make a difference, just as Mayor Sacco has done for so many years.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by township commissioners, school district leaders, students and community members. Notably, Frank Gargiulo, former Commissioner and longtime Superintendent of Hudson County Schools of Technology— which included High Tech High School — was also present at today’s event.
