Estudiantes de la Academia STEM del NBHS participan en preguntas y respuestas con astronautas de la NASA en la Estación Espacial Internacional

The Media Center in North Bergen High School served as the “virtual host location” on Friday for an in-flight question and answer session with two, NASA astronauts currently on the International Space Station.  The LIVE event on NASA.TV was truly out of this world, with students from the North Bergen STEM Academy participating along with students from other Title I Schools in the New York City/New Jersey area.

The North Bergen STEM Academy was joined by Community School for Social Justice (Bronx, NY), Fusion Academy (Brooklyn, NY), Kingsbridge International High School (Bronx, NY), Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy International High School (Bronx, NY) and Martin Van Buren High School (Queens, NY).

“This is a historical event for our district and STEM Academy,” said North Bergen Schools Superintendent Dr. George Solter. “The opportunity to have our students interact with NASA Astronauts during a mission at the International Space Station is something that they will take with them for the rest of their lives. I would like to commend the efforts of Dr. Jared Keshishian, District Supervisor of Science and our Coordinator of Experiential Learning Mrs. Stephanie Stern-Protz, who also serves as NASA CCRI (Climate Change Research Initiative) Education Ambassador.  They have been instrumental in the realization of this event.”

Students had to pre-record their questions and submit them to NASA for a chance to be highlighted during the event and for their questions to be answered LIVE by Astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Shane Kimbrough.  Students didn’t know until the event kicked off if their questions were selected by NASA. A total of six North Bergen students (Aaliyah Garcia, Benjamin Diaz, Zahraa Elmansoury, Emily Estrada, Hailey Hernandez, and Samuel Diaz), submitted questions for a chance to be chosen.
