The vision of Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the Board of Commissioners has come true. On Saturday, a brand new, downtown library branch, the third library in the municipality, opened on the former site of a furniture store which burned to the ground several years back. The multi-story building is also home to the new, downtown recreation center. It was constructed at a cost of nearly $20 million, with federal, county and local sources all contributing.
In addition to books, the library space features classrooms, quiet rooms, office space and a theater stage.
The recreation center has an indoor basketball court with a running track overlooking it from the floor above. There is an outdoor gym facility with numerous exercise machines. There’s even an artificial turf, practice soccer field on the roof with lighting. Library Director Sai Rao says she plans on utilizing the recreation portion of the venue for library programs as well.
There is also a parking garage on site. The new library branch and recreation center is located at the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and 13th Street.
