Students in schools within the North Bergen School District have been collecting food for the past week to be distributed to the North Bergen Housing Authority, the township’s Senior Citizen Center, local food pantries and houses of worship. It’s part of a districtwide effort to engage the students in community involvement and learning the meaning of giving back to your neighbors.
Among the schools taking part in the food donation drives are Robert Fulton and Franklin, each collecting non-perishable items, both from within their own school community and from the community at-large. The schools are even coordinating their efforts with North Bergen C.A.R.E.S., the local organization in town which distributes food and toys and clothing throughout the year.
The collection drives will be continuing throughout November and into December, so families in need to can have a little bit extra to put on their holiday dinner tables. Franklin School has also just begun a toy drive for the holiday season which will continue through December 17.
