Pennsylvania Man Arrested For Attempted Murder In Bayonne

The Bayonne Police Department has arrested 38-year old Dwight Washington of Bristol, Pennsylvania.  According to Captain Eric Amato, at 7:57 pm on September 21, officers responded to the area of West 28^th Street on a report of shots fired.  Once on the scene, officers were unable to locate a victim or a shooter. 

Police officers were then approached by witnesses to the shooting.   The witnesses  observed the actor, later identified as Washington, shoot a 38-year old male victim before fleeing the scene in an older model, Mercedes Benz.  While still at the scene, officers received information that a gunshot victim had just entered the emergency room of the Bayonne Medical Center. 

An investigation was immediately initiated by the Bayonne Police Department’s Detective Bureau.   Captain Amato says, “it was confirmed, that while the victim remained seated in his vehicle after dropping off a friend in the area, Washington approached the vehicle and fired a handgun several times in the direction of the victim, striking the victim numerous times.”   The victim was able to escape in his vehicle.  He drove himself to the Bayonne Medical Center as Washington fled the scene.

The lengthy and detailed investigation led to Washington being positively identified as the shooter and detectives were able to trace him to his residence in Bristol, Pennsylvania.  On December 22, Bayonne Police Detectives coordinated with the United States Marshals Service, where agents were able to take him into custody at his residence without incident.  Washington remains in custody awaiting extradition back to New Jersey.

Washington is being charged with Criminal Attempted Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, and Certain Persons not to Possess a Firearm.
