Prosecutor: North Bergen Man Allegedly Attempts To Hire Assassin To Murder Woman

A 37-year old, North Bergen man allegedly tried to hire someone to kill a woman he knew according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.  Miguel Cortes has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, a first-degree crime, after he was arrested on Thursday, May 14, outside his home on Paterson Plank Road.

Suarez says Cortes was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility. The State has filed a motion for detention in this case, which is tentatively scheduled for Monday, May 20, 2024.

Suarez says the incident unfolded on Thursday, May 9, 2024 when the North Bergen Police Department received a tip of a possible murder-for-hire scheme. The investigation found the defendant offered money to another individual to murder a female known to Cortes. The intended victim was not injured.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Major Case Unit and the North Bergen Police Department with the investigation and arrest.

The above charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
