For the second time in less than a week, a Hudson County man has been charged with possessing images of child sexual abuse according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

Last week, 26-year old Brandon Tyler Mooney of Bayonne was charged by federal prosecutors with possession and distribution of child sex photos.  Yesterday, Sellinger announced that 30-year old Christopher Carvajal of North Bergen had pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Claire C. Cecchi in Newark federal court to information charging him with one count of possession of child pornography.

According to Sellinger, in April 2023, Carvajal’s iPhone was seized at Newark International Airport.  A search of the phone by law enforcement revealed that Carvajal’s iPhone contained more than 900 video files, and more than 400 image files depicting sexual abuse of minors, which included infants and toddlers.  Sellinger added that Carvajal’s iPhone also contained communications in which he discussed his desire for sexual encounters with young children.

This is not the first time Carvajal has been charged with child sexual abuse charges by law enforcement officials.  He was previously convicted in Bergen County Superior Court on a child pornography offense.

Possession of child pornography carries a mandatory, minimum penalty of 10 years in prison for a defendant who has a prior conviction of a child pornography offense, and a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison plus a fine of $250,000.  A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
