If you were hoping to drive across the Route 7 Witt Penn Bridge today or tomorrow, you are out of luck. The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that the span over the Hackensack River, connecting Jersey City and Kearny is closed in both directions until 11 pm on Sunday night for construction.
State officials say that the old bridge lift span is being demolished. Tests will also be done on the new, bridge lift span.
Detour signs have been posted in both directions.
The bridge is a major connection between New Jersey’s two, largest cities, Newark and Jersey City.
