On Wednesday, State Senator and Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack played host to Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation that phases out the eviction moratorium, provides significant tenant protections, and allocates $750 million in rental assistance and utility payment assistance.
Once the eviction moratorium ends on August 31st, this legislation will provide additional evictions protections for low and moderate income families ending on December 31st, 2021.
“I have been a tenant advocate all of my life,” said Senator/Mayor Stack. “Ensuring housing
stability for the most vulnerable and for those who have been struggling during this pandemic was vital to not exacerbate the public health crisis. This legislation is instrumental in preventing mass evictions. Equally important, it provides rental payments so that landlords receive revenue needed to operate and maintain their properties.”
As Governor Murphy took the stage, a group of Anti-Vax protestors in attendance began speaking up, with one yelling “Murderer, Assassino” drawing boos from the crowd and the ire of the Governor as he delivered to the crowd the covid-19 numbers for Wednesday.
“These folks back there have lost their minds-you’ve lost your minds”, Governor Murphy said to the protestors. “You are the ultimate knuckleheads, and because of what you are saying and stand for, people are losing their life… You have to know that. Look in the mirror.”
New Jersey reported over 1,100 new positive cases, 13 deaths, 598 hospitalizations with 99 entering the intensive care unit; the covid positivity rate is currently over 5%.
