The 97-year old, male victim of a fire in Jersey City on Thursday, May 15, 2025, has died as a result of his injuries. Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez made the sad announcement this afternoon.
Shortly after 1:30 p.m. last Thursday, the Jersey City Fire Department was notified of a fire at 318 York Street. According to Suarez, when first responders arrived, they observed fire in the basement apartment. As firefighters were battling the blaze they found an injured male who later was identified as 97-year old Albert Von Chorba of Jersey City. He had serious injuries and was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, and later the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after noon on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department investigated the fire. Foul play is not suspected and the cause appears to be electrical in nature.
