Sires’ Statement on Judicial System’s Defense of Democratic Institutions

As President Donald Trump continues to defy logic and refuse to concede the Presidential Election to former Vice-President Joe Biden; and, with state court after state court finding no fraud being committed in the November Election, Congressman Albio Sires (D – District 8) has issued the following statement regarding the judicial system’s protection of democratic institutions:

Our nation was built on a system of checks and balances to prevent any individual, or branch, from felling the foundations of our democracy in its own self-interestIn the weeks since the election, the institution of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has been challenged by the very people who are supposed to protect our democratic institutions. The President, his staff, over 15 attorneys general, and 126 of my Republican colleagues actively put their own interests ahead of our nation’s when they pursued a lawsuit to throw out votes from four states. The Supreme Court, along with numerous other courts, has stood firm and acted as a check on a man who uses conspiracy theories and baseless claims in an attempt to cling to power. Without the checks of our judicial system, our government would look very similar to authoritarian regimes that refuse to acknowledge the results of free and fair elections.
