Sister Gavioli of Family Promise of Hudson County Honored By County Commissioners on Her Retirement

Jersey City – The Hudson County Board of Commissioners applaud, honor and commend Sister Georgette A. Gavioli, S.S.J. on her retirement and thank her for her dedicated, faithful, and loving service with Family Promise of Hudson County.

Sister Georgette A. Gavioli, S.S.J. has devoted many years to educating children as a Sister of Saint Joseph.  She was first assigned to teach at Immaculate Conception School in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, and subsequently served at the following schools:  St. Callistus School in Philadelphia from 1968 to 1971; Saint Stephen School in Philadelphia from 1971 to 1972; Saint Vincent School in Germantown, Pennsylvania from 1972 to 1980; Blessed Sacrament School in Newark, New Jersey from 1980 to 1992; and since 1992, Sister Georgette A. Gavioli, S.S.J. has served as Pastoral Associate at St. Aloysius Church in Jersey City.

In her lifelong service, Sister Georgette Gavioli, S.S.J. has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is a kind-hearted and determined soul who is more than willing to help those in need.  Her courageousness and loving spirit know no bounds as has been demonstrated in recent years with her service at Family Promise of Hudson County.

In the Spring of 2014, Sister Georgette Gavioli, S.S.J. joined a group of clergy and lay leaders from across Jersey City that started meeting in the basement of Ocean Avenue Baptist Church to discuss the challenges of homelessness and housing insecurity in the community.  The group founded Family Promise of Hudson County which opened its doors in 2018.  Sister Gavioli has been an instrumental member of the organization since its inception, serving as a Board Trustee and assisting families who are experiencing homelessness, or have limited resources, achieve sustainable independence.

Throughout the pandemic, Sister Georgette A. Gavioli, S.S.J. has helped deliver food and other household items to families served by Family Promise of Hudson County while also procuring gift cards for groceries and other necessities.  Additionally, her bright personality and generous heart helped keep morale high for her fellow Board Members and the Family Promise of Hudson County staff, all of whom now have a special place in their hearts for her.  Sister Gavioli is a shining light for the nonprofit organization, demonstrating how one’s heart can always hold more love.  In addition to selfless service, she and her fellow Sisters of Saint Joseph also provided financial assistance, allowing Family Promise of Hudson County to meet the needs of families they assist.

It is with great pride that this Board recognizes the outstanding service of Sister Georgette A. Gavioli, S.S.J., who has touched the lives of countless residents of Hudson County through her dedicated, faithful and loving service.
