Stop paying $100K+ for careers AI is already eating

Over the last three years, AI stopped being a demo and became a daily tool. Writing, coding drafts, images, translation, summaries, and a lot of office grunt work got cheaper and faster in public view. That is not a press release. That is what people are already using.

That shift collides with two other facts families keep ignoring. First, many students still treat college as a place to “find themselves,” often on loans. Second, kids interact less face-to-face than they did 10 or 20 years ago, which weakens the soft skills that used to cushion weak job training. Put those together and you get a dangerous product: expensive credentials aimed at junior screen jobs that may shrink before the debt is paid.

The blunt rule is simple. Do not spend tens or hundreds of thousands on a career path whose main value was being a cheap junior brain at a laptop. Schools get paid whether you get hired or not. You are the one who pays either way.

Junior screen jobs die first

Careers do not all vanish in one or two years. Licenses, hospitals, courts, unions, and physical work do not flip overnight. What collapses first is the easy entry path: jobs where a new graduate mainly turns information into more information.

Most exposed soon, then likely to shrink hard over the next several years:

• General office admin, data entry, scheduling, and basic HR paperwork
• Soft customer support and scripted call-center chat
• Basic bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, invoice chasing
• Junior analysts who mostly build decks and summaries from public data
• Content mills: SEO blogs, product descriptions, captions, generic social posts
• Basic graphic design and simple template video editing
• Entry-level translation, transcription, and captioning
• Junior paralegal and document-review grunt work
• Junior coding that is mostly simple websites, basic apps, and glue scripts
• “Marketing coordinator” roles that are really email blasts, Canva, and dashboards
• Tutoring and test prep that only drills standard worksheets
• Travel booking middlemen and routine bank-teller desks
• Newsroom work built only on rewrite and aggregation, not original reporting

Also under pressure, even if the titles survive longer: pure image-reading specialties that never move into procedures or leadership; routine tax prep for simple returns; basic real-estate paperwork; mid-level white-collar jobs that exist to polish memos between executives.

In medicine, AI vision can already beat humans on many X-ray pattern tasks. That does not delete doctors tomorrow. It does mean “I only sit in a dark room and call fractures” is a weaker bet than roles that mix imaging with procedures, communication, and liability. You do not compete by out-reading the model. You compete by owning the judgment around it.

“Hiring now” is not a future

A field that is hiring this year is not a promise it still pays in three, five, or ten years. Employers hire for today’s shortage. Loan officers do not care if the job title ages badly. Paying elite tuition for a fading lane is not caution. It is bad judgment with interest.

If a job can be done entirely in a browser, with no license and no customer who knows your name, assume it is already under attack. Junior seats get cut first. Senior people who can sell, decide, supervise, or take blame last longer. Waiting for the pink slip to treat this as real is how people get surprised by a trend that was already visible.

What still survives the purge

Work tied to physical reality, licenses, ownership, or people who will not accept a chatbot as the responsible party. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC, welders, mechanics. Nurses, EMTs, and other hands-on clinical roles. Skilled field technicians. Sales that require trust. Owners and operators who run a crew. Even those jobs will use AI. They are just harder to delete with a software update.

Debt for vibes is not a plan

Stop borrowing money for a degree with no job attached. That is not ambition. That is buying a delay and a bill. If you do not know what you will do on Monday after graduation, you are not ready to sign loans. “Finding yourself” is free. Debt is not.

Prefer short, cheap paths into scarce skills: trades, certificates, community college, apprenticeships, employer training, or a required license without the luxury sticker price. If you still choose college, make the cost small enough that a mediocre outcome does not ruin you, and pick a field with proof of hire, not vibes.

Use the tools from day one. The edge is not pretending AI is fake. The edge is knowing a domain well enough to catch when the machine is wrong, then being the person accountable for the decision.

Hudson County parents and students do not need another soft pep talk about “investing in yourself.” They need a clearer sentence: expensive school for a replaceable junior knowledge job is a bad bet in a market that is moving this fast. Plan careers that still matter when the tools get better every quarter. Do not wait until the career is already gone to notice.
