Two Halloween DWI Arrests in Hoboken

A Union City man and a Fairview man were each arrested for DWI in separate incidents in Hoboken on Halloween.

According to Detective/Lieutenant Danilo Cabrera of the Hoboken Police Department, the first arrested took place just past midnight, at 12:06 am when 46-year old, Union City resident Timothy Bracero was involved in a motor vehicle crash at the corner of 2nd Street and Willow Avenue.  When officers arrived at the scene, they observed a gold, Chrysler Town and Country parked on the sidewalk.

According to Cabrera, the car had been traveling south on Willow when it jumped the southeastern corner at 2nd Street, striking a garbage can before stopping.  When police questioned the driver, later identified as Bracero, they believed he was under the influence of an intoxicant.  A field sobriety test was conducted.  Police determined he was unfit to safely operate the vehicle, and Bracero was placed under arrest for DWI.

A subsequent search found Bracero to be in possession of suspected marijuana, suspected Phencyclidine and drug paraphernalia, for which he was charged.   He was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.

In the second DWI incident, 26-year old Waleed Abdouni of Fairview was arrested at 11:49 on Halloween night at 500 Washington Street.  According to Detective/Lieutenant Cabrera, three officers were walking  near 1st and Bloomfield Streets when they observed a Grey Honda Accord driving the wrong way on 1st Street, a one way street.  The car was heading westbound.

As the officers used hand and verbal commands for the driver to stop, he drove around them onto the southwest corner sidewalk, striking, ironically, a one way sign.  Abdouni then backed up his Accord off of the sidewalk, and drove northbound on Bloomfield Street.

Lieutenant Cabrera caught up with the car at 5th and Washington Streets and ordered it to stop.  Officers then performed a field sobriety test and it was determined Abdouni was unfit to operate a vehicle in his condition.

He was placed under arrest, charged with Eluding and DWI, and taken to police headquarters.  Additional charges of reckless driving, leaving the scene and driving the wrong way on a street, were added.  Abdouni was taken to the County Jail in Kearny.

Both arrestees in this report are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
