The Jose Marti STEM Academy Media Room was packed Thursday, as U.S. Senator Cory Booker announced a federal EPA grant for several New Jersey school districts, including Union City. The money will allow for the purchase of electric school buses and charging stations.

The federal EPA grant totals $19-million for the purchase of 42, environmentally clean, electric buses.  In addition to the Union City Board of Education, school districts in Newark, Elizabeth, Lakewood and Bloomfield are receiving funding to purchase the buses.

Specifically, Union City will receive six, 24 electric passenger buses and six, 54 passenger buses with charging stations.

The aim is to keep the air as clean as possible, removing toxic fumes that we breathe.

Union City Superintendent of Schools Silvia Abbato is thrilled to be receiving the new, envirornmentally clean, electric buses.

Also attending the ceremony were Union City Mayor and State Senator Brian Stack, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage, Rep. Rob Menendez, Jr. (D) District 8, numerous school officials from Union City.
