Union City Mayor Brian Stack and the Board of Commissioners celebrated the Jewish Festival of Lights this afternoon by lighting the Menorah at 3700 Palisade Avenue on the holiday’s seventh day.

Students from the nearby Masivta Sanz School were on hand to celebrate.

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt.

Hanukkah reaffirms the ideals of Judaism by the lighting of candles on each day of the festival.

The holiday ends at sundown on Friday, December 15th.
