Honduras declared its independence from Spain in 1821, along with other Central American provinces.  For a short time, Honduras was part of the first Mexican Empire.  It then became a part of the United Provinces of Central America Federation in 1823.  When the Federation dissolved in 1838, Honduras became an independent republic.
