The Weehawken Indians have advanced to the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 1 softball semi-finals. The top seeded Indians totally dismantled the ninth seed, Belvidere, on Friday afternoon at Weehawken park along the Hudson River waterfront.
Maybe it was Belvidere’s awe of the Manhattan skyline. Maybe it was the long bus ride from western New Jersey to the Hudson River waterfront. Most certainly it was the dominance of pitcher Savanna McHale, the hitting of shortstop Bri McHale, Savanna’s younger sister who doubled three times, and the shear grit of catcher Envey Duran who shook off at least three, hard foul tips off of her body behind the plate, before sealing the 10-0, 6 inning, mercy rule-shortened victory with a huge home run down the left field line in inning 6.
For Weehawken, it’s on to the state sectional semifinals on Wednesday, May 31st against 12th seed Roselle Park, who knocked off number 4 seed Hoboken on Friday.
This squad certainly looks like it wants more than just the Hudson County Championship!!
