History was made at Waterfront Park on Saturday afternoon, as the Weehawken softball squad defeated Whippany Park by a score of 3-0. The victory gave the Indians their second, consecutive NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 championship. For the first time in Weehawken High School sports history, a team has won a league title, a Hudson County title and a state sectional title in the same season.
This game was nearly over in the first inning after junior catcher Envey Duran hit a mammoth, 3-run home run halfway up into the trees in left center field to give Weehawken a 3-0 lead. From that point forward, junior pitcher Savanna McHale took control, shutting out the visitors, who only advanced one baserunner to second base.
It was a total team effort which thrilled the crowd of township residents who were in attendance.
The Indians now look to advance in the state tournament, facing Cedar Grove, the Essex County champion, at 5 pm on Tuesday, June 6 along the Weehawken waterfront.
