The West New York-based, non-profit Hope + Future held a basketball tournament for county youth on Friday evening. Approximately 150 kids from all across Hudson County participated. The group’s mission is to provide health and wellness programs which keep kids engaged, off of the street and prepared academically for high school and college.
The Hope + Future Center is located at 6515 Polk Street. Approximately 2,000 kids from throughout Hudson County attend the free center, which allows them to participate in sports, but also to receive assistance with school work and to gain self-esteem. The non-profit began back in 2007.
The group has partnered with the West New York Recreation Department. Friday’s basketball tournament, which allowed both boys and girls to compete against one another, followed a soccer tournament held a bit earlier in the summer. The kids were divided into middle school-aged and high school-aged groups.
Free T-shirts were given out to the participants, and Sneaker Hub in Union City awarded $100 gift cards to the winning high school squad and $50 gift cards to the winners in the middle school-aged bracket. The event was another example of the commitment Hope + Future has to providing a safe and encouraging outlet to the youth in Hudson County.
