The 40th anniversary of the New Jersey Special Olympics are getting underway this evening at The College of New Jersey in Lawrenceville. This annual event helps people with intellectual disabilities not only compete in athletic competition, but it fosters friendships among athletes and their families.
This morning at the northern most entrance to James Braddock Park on Bergenline Avenue in North Bergen, members of the West New York Police Department joined with their fellow North Hudson Police Departments to kick off the annual Special Olympics Torch Run.
The officers ran south on Bergenline, handing the torch over to members of the Guttenberg force, who continued the march through West New York and Union City.
In all, there are 26 legs of the torch run, each having police officers committed to making the cause of the Special Olympics known throughout the state of New Jersey.
