The West New York Police Department will be conducting enhanced enforcement against impaired driving on Saturday, May 16th, 2026, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. A DWI checkpoint will be in operation in the area of 5200 John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
The primary goal of this checkpoint is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by discouraging impaired driving before it happens. During the checkpoint, officers will briefly interact with drivers and watch for signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
The West New York Police Department remains committed to keeping everyone on our roadways safe. We remind the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol
certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can also affect a person’s ability to
drive safely.
In addition to the checkpoint, extra patrols will be deployed throughout the town as part of an ongoing effort by the Town of West New York and the West New York Police Department to reduce impaired driving and enhance roadway safety.The West New York Police Department recently conducted two DWI sobriety checkpoints as part of ongoing efforts to enhance roadway safety and deter impaired driving.
On February 21, 2026, between 2000 and 0400 hours, officers operated a DWI checkpoint at 5200 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, resulting in 4 DWI arrests. A second checkpoint was conducted on April 11, 2026, between 2200 and 0600 hours at the same location, resulting in 2
DWI arrests. Public media releases were issued in advance for both operations, and arrests were still made despite the prior notifications. The primary objective of these checkpoints is deterrence reducing impaired driving and enhancing roadway safety rather than generating arrest numbers.

get you home safely.
• Consider staying overnight at the location where the event or gathering is held.
• If you observe a suspected impaired driver, contact law enforcement. Speaking up can save lives.
