The West New York Police Department’s Safe Ride Campaign is underway with the goal of protecting e-bike, motorized scooter and moped users and pedestrians. Those who disregard the town’s traffic laws will receive summonses and have their vehicles confiscated.
The Police Department has been giving assembly presentations in the Middle School and at Memorial High School this week, going over the do’s and don’ts when it comes to safely operating e-bikes, motorized scooters and mopeds. Municipal and state laws, traffic rules and proper operating procedures were emphasized.

The Police Department, and Mayor Albio Sires, made it clear to the students that their goal was to keep everyone safe…the vehicle riders and pedestrians. But they also stressed that if the users of these various forms of transportation disobey the law, they will receive a summonses and their vehicle will be confiscated.
They showed photographs and videos of news reports of what can happen when laws are not followed….serious injuries and in many instances, death.
They provided statistics, both local and national, showing the increase in injuries over the past several years due to the improper use of e-bikes, motorized scooters and mopeds.
Memorial High School plans to add bike racks for those students owning motorized forms of transportation, but the school said, it will not permit students to bring the batteries used to operate the vehicles inside of the building.
Enforcement of the laws will begin almost immediately.
