The West New York Police Department played the North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue Department in a charity softball game at Miller Stadium on Sunday to raise funds for the family of a little boy recently diagnosed with leukemia.

6-year old Henry Escarret is a member one of West New York’s Little League teams.  Several of the coaches in the league are police officers or firefighters.  When the West New York police unions approached the regional fire department with an offer to participate in the charity softball game to raise funds for the Escarret family, the firefighters did not hesitate and agreed on the spot.

The game was well attended by the community, and a total of $5,000 was raised from ticket sales, T-shirt purchases and food and beverage sales.

The final score did not matter, although the fire department did come out on top.  The important thing was the unity the event brought to the community, and the financial assistance it gave to Henry, Jr. and his family, who tragically lost their home in a fire several years ago.

Congratulations to the police officers and the firefighters.  Best wishes go out to little Henry, as he prepares for his next cancer treatment.
