During a City Hall ceremony held on Tuesday, Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro swore in Hoboken’s new, Acting Police Chief, Captain Steven Aguiar. A 20-year veteran of the Department, Aguiar replaces Acting Chief Daniel LoBue, who took the reins after the June 2021 retirement of then-Chief Ken Ferrante. LoBue has also retired.
Acting Chief Aguiar becomes Hoboken’s second, Acting Chief of Hispanic descent. Mayor Bhalla said he “was proud” to welcome Aguiar to the Acting Chief’s role. “Hoboken is in good hands with Chief Aguiar who has the intelligence, leadership and compassion to lead HPD forward,” the mayor said.
Former Chief Ferrante stated, “Changing of the guard and transition of power! I was proud to be at the retirement ceremony today for Chief Dan LoBue & the swearing-in of Chief Steven Aguiar. The City, department & our profession is in the best of hands. A City of Hoboken native leads us today!”
A Hoboken native, Aguiar joined the Hoboken Police Department in 2002. He has steadily moved up the ranks, serving as a Uniform Patrol Officer and Detective with the Vice Unit, Commander of the Bureau of Internal Affairs, the department’s Technical Service Bureau, and the Emergency Response Unit. He has served on the Chief’s command staff since 2018 and he is a member of the City’s Policing Policy Task Force.
