An old, shut down pocket park tucked into the side of a hill at 71st Street and Columbia Avenue in North Bergen will be transformed in a community garden. Township officials, neighborhood residents and North Bergen High School Environmental Club members broke ground for the garden on Wednesday.
The site will also be home to a new, pickle ball court. The project, paid for using grants, one of which was obtained from the school district’s Environmental Club at North Bergen High School, will have lights for the garden, but not for the pickle ball court.
According to Commissioner Hugo Cabrera, local residents will be able to decide what they want to plant in the garden…flowers, vegetables, it’s up to them.
Commissioner Allen Pascual told Hudson TV the old park, which has been shutdown for some time, was his childhood playground. It had minimal equipment, but he spent many hours there. He is thrilled with the new plans to develop the site into a community garden and a place for pickle ball enthusiasts.
The project is expected to be completed in a few months.
