THIS STORY CONTAINS NEW INFORMATION                                                                                                                                                                                              Fire broke out in a Jersey City home this morning, resulting in one fatality and injuring several other people.   The blaze went to three alarms.  Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione told Hudson TV in an email, “At approximately 6:49 a.m., the Jersey City Fire Department responded to a call for a working fire on Stegman Street.  Upon arrival, JCFD firefighters observed heavy smoke and fire.  Five residents from two buildings (267 and 269) had already self-evacuated.  JCFD firefighters pulled an adult male from the second floor of 269 Stegman, the original fire building.  He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

Wallace-Scalcione went on to say that it appears an adult female had jumped from the second story of 269 Stegman, a single family residence.  She was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries.
As is standard procedure when there is a fatality, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Regional Arson Task Force is handling the investigation.
The Jersey City Fire Department was able to contain most of the fire to the initial fire building, with minimal extension to a church on the right and water damage to the single family residence on the left.
