Weehawken Township Opens Cooling Centers Amid Heatwave

WEEHAWKEN, NJ – With temperatures soaring, Weehawken Township is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. Today, the Township announced the opening of three cooling centers that will provide relief from the excessive heat through Saturday.

These centers, open from 9:00 am until midnight daily, are located at:

• Weehawken Park, 4800 Park Avenue
• Potter Place Community Center, 2-4 Potter Place
• Gregory Avenue Center, 525 Gregory Avenue

The heatwave, predicted to last for the next few days, poses significant risks, especially to the elderly, children, and those with underlying health conditions. Heat-related illnesses can escalate rapidly, leading to heat exhaustion or potentially life-threatening heat stroke.

The cooling centers are part of the Township’s comprehensive response to protect its residents during this period of extreme weather. “The well-being of our community is our top priority,” said a representative from the Township. “We want to ensure that every resident has a place to go to escape the heat.”

Residents needing transportation assistance to any of these cooling centers can call the Weehawken Police Department at 201-863-7800. Arrangements can also be made for residents needing to use the cooling centers after midnight.

The Township encourages everyone to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly and those living alone. Everyone should stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary exertion during the hottest parts of the day.
