Guy and Solomon Pledge to Keep Courthouse Park on Track in Journal Square

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and Jersey City Mayor James Solomon issued a joint statement on the future of Courthouse Park, saying they are working with the courts to move the project forward without delays or added costs to taxpayers.

The two leaders met last Wednesday with the Hudson County Assignment Judge to explore options that would keep the Journal Square park project on track while addressing issues with the historic county court buildings on the site.

“We recognize that Hudson County and Jersey City have an opportunity to create a truly unique and transformational public space with Courthouse Park in the Journal Square neighborhood — providing residents with a much-needed park to call their own. We are committed to seeing that project through to completion, while managing a complex set of issues that must be addressed regarding historic County court buildings.”

Guy and Solomon said they are committed to exploring “all possible options” to complete necessary repairs to the court buildings in the most cost-effective way, and pledged transparency with each other and the community as alternatives are pursued.

The Challenge

The statement acknowledged that the project must balance several competing interests: the community’s desire to see the park built quickly, the New Jersey Superior Courts’ need to continue operations during construction, and the goal of avoiding unnecessary costs to taxpayers.

“We understand that members of the community want to see Courthouse Park constructed as quickly as possible, and we continue to work with New Jersey Superior Courts to figure out a plan that allows everyone to continue operations during construction without compromising its interest in administering the justice system and without unnecessarily burdening the taxpayers or delaying the construction efforts.”

Looking Ahead

“As Mayor and County Executive, we look forward to the day when families can gather, children can play, and residents can enjoy a truly magnificent Courthouse Park,” the statement concluded.
