248th Birthday of U S. Marines Celebrated in Grand Style in Union City

It was a fabulous evening, as Union City celebrated the 248th birthday of the United States Marine Corps in grand style on Saturday night in the High School gymnasium.  Union City Mayor Brian Stack was honored for his longstanding support of the JROTC Program.

The Union City Board of Education began the Junior ROTC program in 1995.  Anually, approximately 200 Union City High School and Jose Marti STEM Academy students participate in the JROTC, with another 250 students beginning at the age of eight taking part in the Junior Marines program.

Saturday’s gala ball featured demonstrations bt the cadets and dinner for those in attendance.  Mayor Stack received a plaque for his longstanding support of the Junior Marines and JROTC programs.

Gunnery Sergeant Caonabo Reyes, the JROTC’s program coordinator for more than two decades, spoke of the discipline and training the cadets receive.  Many have gone on to active military service.  Others have become teachers or members of law enforcement in Union City.

Union City Superintendent of Schools Silvia Abbato spoke of her pride in the JROTC program and the strides taken by the cadets following their graduation.

All in all, Saturday was a fitting tribute to the United States Marine Corps.
