On Tuesday night at Union City’s Colin Powell School, the Board of Commissioners celebrated the 180th anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence from Spain.
The evening, which saw approximately 200 people in attendance, featured dancing, a traditional Dominican dinner and proclamations given to three, prominent Dominican-Americans from Union City who were honored as Dominican-Americans of the Year.

Those honored were Felix Adames, a soccer coach in the city’s Recreation Department; author and teacher Nancy Sanchez; and Kennedy Ng, a musician, video producer and member of the Union City Board of Education.
Special recognition was also given to the late, Sigfrido Humberto Duarte, a local artist who contributed to the fabric of the city.
In his remarks, Mayor Brian Stack congratulated the Dominican residents in attendance for all they do to contribute to Union City. He said it didn’t matter what Hispanic country they came from, all residents of Union City are one people, contributing in so many fifferent ways to make the municipality what it is…one large family.
