North Bergen Rocked by Series of Robberies: Police Investigate String of Incidents

NORTH BERGEN—A series of disturbing incidents, including a violent carjacking, has put North Bergen residents on edge. The incidents, which occurred over the past week, have prompted a swift response from local law enforcement.

The first incident took place on March 24th, 2024, at 1:30 PM, when a resident of Newark rented a U-Haul truck from the Tonnelle Avenue store to pick up cargo from New York City. Upon returning the truck, he was assaulted and robbed of some of the items he had picked up. The victim was hit over the head and on the back of his arms by three assailants. One of the assailants demanded the keys to his car, while the other two had a U-Haul van that they were controlling. All three suspects fled the scene towards West Side Avenue. Most of the stolen cargo was recovered, except for one box that remained inside the stolen truck. The van used by the other two assailants was also stolen.

The victim was able to contact the police from the U-Haul store, where he received medical attention for his injuries. He had left a jacket inside the stolen U-Haul that contained a significant amount of cash.

The second incident occurred on March 31, 2024, at 5:18 A.M., at the Shell Gas Station located at 1810 Tonnelle Avenue. Two middle-aged store clerks were robbed at gunpoint by a male suspect described as a dark-skinned male, wearing a black hooded jacket, black facemask, black pants with stripes, and white sneakers. The suspect brandished a firearm and demanded money from the clerks, fleeing the scene with over $2,000 in cash.

The third incident took place on April 1, 2024, at 2:09 A.M., at the BP Gas Station located at 2510 Tonnelle Avenue. A 33-year-old North Bergen resident was carjacked at gunpoint while parked at a gas pump in his 2020 Range Rover SVR. The suspect, described as a dark-skinned male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and a facemask, demanded the victim’s car keys and fled in the victim’s vehicle.
