The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, May 3, 2025, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.
just past 4 p.m. yesterday, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a motor vehicle crash in the area of Old Bergen Road and Merritt Street. Suarez says officers responding to the area located an unresponsive male in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree on Merritt Street. A press release from the Prosecutor’s Office states, “The unresponsive male – later identified as Devon Reid, age 39, of Elizabeth – was discovered with a gunshot wound to the neck. Reid was transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:16 p.m. The Cause and Manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.”
No arrests have been made as of mid-afternoon on Sunday.
