The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue are investigating a fatal fire that occurred in Guttenberg on Monday, June 23, 2025.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, just after 7 a.m., North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue was notified of a fire at 6914 Park Avenue. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they located fire coming from the third floor of the residential building. As fire suppression activities were underway, firefighters located a male victim – later identified as 37-year old Marcos Santa-Zayas of Guttenberg – with serious injuries. He was taken to Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 8:20 a.m.
Suarez says the cause and origin are being investigated by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, but foul play is not suspected at this time.
