A fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Sunday, September 28, 2025, on Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen is under investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

According to a preliminary investigation, a North Bergen police officer, driving a marked police vehicle, was following a civilian vehicle, when at approximately 11:18 p.m., that civilian vehicle collided with another, uninvolved civilian vehicle between 50th and 51st Streets.

The drivers of the two civilian vehicles were seriously injured in the collision and were later pronounced deceased.  Their identities are not being released at this time.

A press release from the Attorney General’s Office states, “An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability into the circumstances that led up to and transpired during this incident, and no further information is available at this time.”

A 2019 law requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity, or while the decedent is in custody.  All such investigations must be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
